Business should be fun!

With all the doom and gloom ranging from swine flu (although that seems to have disappeared from the front pages pretty quickly) to the global economic crisis I want to remind you of what business is all about.

It's all about enjoying doing what you do. So, here's a simple question. Are you having any fun?

That's what life is all about… having some fun… and yet there are lots of people around who are so miserable they'd only laugh at a train crash. You're going to be dead a long time so now's the time to be enjoying life.

So, how do you make sure you're having fun?

Well, you mix with the right kind of people… people who love what they do and do what they love.

I have three questions I ask myself of any potential client before I'll do business with them and here they are:

  1. Do I like the person? I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover but as a rule books with crappy covers are crappy books. If we don't have empathy its never going to work.
  2. Do they have a viable business? If the business isn't going to make it all the help in the world isn't going to make it go. There's no use flogging a dead horse!
  3. Will they take my advice? Lots of people listen and then do exactly what they were going to do anyhow. The trouble is that when it doesn't work… they blame you. So why waste your time with people who don't listen?

Now, sure, I know that these rules mightn't be appropriate for you and your role in your business but the important thing is to establish the rules that will work for you.

In your personal life think of some simple rules you can use to assess whether you want a person in your life. If you don't, they're sure as heck gunna rain on your parade.

After all, we're not here for a long time; we're here for a good time! To enjoy it we need to surround ourselves with positive people.

When you open your mouth
what comes out?

Hear about the unfortunate experience I had the other day when a couple of guys stood up to talk...

Find out what you can do about it here...

And please note the rescheduled date, it's now Wednesday May 13.

It's never too late to share your talent

By now you, like a billion others, will have watched the performance of Susan Boyle who sang on Britain's Got Talent and blew everyone away. If you haven't seen it you can see it here...

A good friend of mine, Donald McDowall one of Canberra's leading natural health practitioners, summed up the lessons to be learnt from her appearance on how to win a contest and I reckon his observations are worth sharing...

  1. Have talent, practice and set a goal
  2. Dress comfortably the way you want to sing. (Put the sticker on your chest to dumb yourself down further)
  3. Tease the audience that you may be as dumb as you look
  4. Create expectation
  5. Hit them with all you've got
  6. Be gracious, expecting little response
  7. When the response comes, be gracious and acknowledge it
  8. Let everyone rush to market your talent
  9. Keep practicing and singing to your cat
  10. Count the money from doing what you love to do

The lesson to all is if you have talent, it is never too late to share it. Each one of us has talent… are you sharing it?

Postscript on Victoria's bushfires

A good friend of mine, Max Hitchins is a man of many talents… excellent speaker, publican, piano player and lots more besides. He recently toured the bushfire areas and reported on it in his newsletter. He's asked me to pass on a copy of it and I do so very happily...

Another Commercial

Here's a 60 second television commercial from Toyota that's caught my eye. How well do you think it works… does it leave a message that would influence you positively if you were thinking of buying a car or is the agency having a lend of itself?
