If you’re observant you may have noticed that last Wednesday was my birthday and, if you really did care, you would have sent me birthday wishes. No, no just joking! (Thank you to all of you who did!)

But this business of birthdays is worthwhile pondering upon.

I don’t know how many times I have reminded people in business that wishing somebody a happy birthday on their special day is a fantastic idea, particularly when you go to some trouble to do it, like snail mailing a card or phoning with greetings.

In these days of social media, when people just click “Happy Birthday” when it comes up for anybody in their contacts, it’s probably not as meaningful (although I’m sure that all the people who sent me wishes were sincere about it!).

In any event, my wife and I decided that we would celebrate my birthday by going to see a show and staying in town using one of the free frequent traveller hotel room nights I have accumulated.

Whilst I like to remain silent about personal celebrations and my advancing age, when we were checking in, my wife decided to tell the receptionist it was my birthday, a rather momentous one at that too.

Well, that started those little unexpected touches that mean so much. “We’ll make you our guests of the day,” Sonia the receptionist said. “As well I’ll upgrade you to a corner suite and make sure we send you a bottle of celebratory champagne with our compliments. In addition,” she went on, “We must have your photo taken so everybody knows you are our guests of the day”.

What about those little touches?

How did we feel?

Fantastic!

And really what did it cost the hotel to do? Very little… the room was probably unoccupied for the night and the wine wouldn’t cost that much.

What was it worth? A heck of a lot… I’ve told all my friends and of course I’m writing this blog about it. I’ll become an evangelist for the hotel.

What was the hotel? It was The Pullman On The Park in Melbourne (formerly known as the Hilton On The Park) and I’d recommend it to anybody. Great rooms, great rates and a great team!

What was the show, you ask? It was “Kinky Boots” which my wife loved and I thought wasn’t too bad. I labelled it fluffy, light on story and loud but, if you like the idea of men in drag, dancing in stiletto heeled high boots, and bold little costumes, you’ll love it. It’s certainly colourful and very noisy. But make up your own mind… go see it and stay at TPOTP!

And did I have a great birthday? I sure did! After all it’s the unexpected touches that mean so much and delight your customers, clients, patrons and patients.

What do you do for yours?
