On my monthly audio program I often get to talk to authors whose books have interested me and that have given me food for thought. If you're looking for some reading material over the break here are some books that I reckon are a worthwhile read. Reasons for recommending them are below the list. (The links will take you to the book at Bob's Books, my preferred Australian book supplier.)
The Books:
Robert Gerrish's Flying Solo
Jurek Leon's books - Jurek's collection
Martin Lindstrom's Brand Sense
Daniel Lima's Marketing Works
David Jenkin's What Great Retailers Do
Rick Mansfield's The Perfect Salesperson
Phil Slater's Customer Service From Hell
Why I recommend them:
Golly I have been impressed by Robert Gerrish who without doubt is one of the best, if not the best, business coaches in Australia. He talks just plain and simple, down to earth common sense, so much so that he got me thinking and, more importantly, changing what I do. The book Flying Solo which he co-authored is written for people in business by themselves but, when you think about it, aren't we all?
Scottish accented, Polish named, West Australian resident, retail whiz Jurek Leon is a regular contributor to my monthly audio program and his practical suggestions on almost every aspect of business have won him fans around the world coz of the way he's added big money to their bottom line. Any one of his books will be a profitable read for you. Jurek's collection.
Have you ever wondered why new cars smell so good or why rice bubbles go snap, crackle, pop? Do you know why Singapore Airlines female cabin crew wear a particular fragrance? You get the answer to all these questions and more in Martin Lindstrom's book, Brand Sense. Best of all you'll discover why you should appeal to all the senses to build your business. Brand Sense.
I got talking to Daniele Lima about a remarkable guy, Chris Lee (you may have seen him featured in the press lately), who has the knack of making big companies very profitable and can translate that to small companies. Together they co-authored the book "Marketing Works" and I reckon their five critical marketing steps you must know make it worth the read. Marketing Works
David Jenkin spent his life in retail literally working his way up from the shop floor to head up retail giants and what he doesn't know about retail isn't worth knowing. In "What Great Retailers Do" he talks in simple language and makes everything so crystal clear that you can apply them to any business. Just one thing. I'd hate to go to the supermarket with him coz you'd learn lots but it'd take ages! What Great Retailers Do
If I had to pick one guy to write a book on selling it'd be hard to go past Rick Mansfield who I've known and admired for over 40 years. In The Perfect Salesperson, Rick condenses all he's learnt from starting in life assurance sales (tough call) and ending up owning a company employing 600 sales people (average income $80K years ago). A great read for anyone in business. pithy, practical. The Perfect Salesperson
In his time with New Zealand Post Phil Slater worked with thousands of businesses to show them how to use the power of direct mail. Often though the best campaigns got stuffed up by lousy customer service which is why Phil sat down to research and write his book, Customer Service From Hell. The horror stories may chill your blood but you'll learn heaps from them and Phil's ideas. Customer Service From Hell.
Have a f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c day!
