Yesterday I met with the committee of a community organisation who were really flogging a dead horse. No matter what they tried to organise for the ageing membership. the response was that it had been done before or it wasn’t suitable for them. Apart from that, the committee was made up of people who felt they’d been press-ganged into doing what they were doing because nobody else wanted to do it.

When you put on an activity and have to plead, cajole and twist arms to get people to attend it’s about as enjoyable as having root canal therapy.

So that’s why they asked me to come along and have a chat about getting members more involved.

The first question I asked was, “Are you having any fun?” And from the look on their faces it was obvious that there was no fun doing something they felt they should do but didn’t enjoy.

So I asked, “If it isn’t any fun why do you continue to do it?”

Of course, I gave them some options (and there are plenty) on what they could do to build membership and get involvement (which would mean getting more participation… their real problem). But I also gave them my frank and honest opinion which was that it was time to administer organisational euthanasia. I couldn’t see any point in working their hearts out to sustain something that was in it its death throes in any event.

The moving finger writes and having writ moves on. Now and then you have to recognise that something has run its course.

So, please reflect for a moment. Are you involved in an organisation, or even a business, which is almost ready for euthanasia? No point, pardon the expression, in flogging a dead horse!

In any aspect of your life, ask yourself the question, “Are you having any fun?” and, if not, take the decision!
