If you're like many people every year you make a list
of resolutions that get broken sometimes even before New Year's Day is
over or are well and truly forgotten by the end of January. If that
has happened to you don't despair because it's easy to get back on
track. All it takes is a little time and commitment.
First of all, forget what you planned in the euphoria of New Year's
Eve and ask yourself "What are the five most important things in my
life right now I must do to achieve what I want to achieve?"
Once you've decided on your five objectives, give each of them a
target date for completion. Think through what you have to do to
achieve them, breaking the actions down into small steps if
necessary. Remember, an ant eats an elephant bite-by-bite!
In thinking them through make sure you consider the answers to these
three questions in respect of each objective.
-
One, where am I now in relation to this?
-
Two, where do I want to be by the target date?
-
Three, how am I going to get there?
Write down both your objectives and the strategies to
achieve them and put them somewhere you can readily refer to them.
Then, as Nike used to say, do it... just do it!
Once you've done that you are well on your way! You see proper
planning promotes perfect performance.

Facts From The
1500's
The next time you are
washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't
just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some
facts about the 1500’s.
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in
May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were
starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the
body odour.
Hence, the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the
house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other
sons and men, then the women and finally the children - last of all
the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose
someone in it. Hence, the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the
bath water.
Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled
high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to
get warm, so all the dogs, cats and other small animals (mice, bugs)
lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the
animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence, the saying "It's
raining cats and dogs."

Things You Don’t See Every Day.
There were a couple of photos circulating
on the Internet that took my fancy. Here's one of them showing a couple of kids finding out the answer to an
age-old question!
The Right Philosophy.
Life's journey is not to arrive at the
grave safely in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways,
totally worn out, shouting, "Wow! What a ride."
A Pig's
Best Friend!
There is one thing I
neglected to mention in my
story last month about the chook, the pig, the bike and its rider
was the positive power of having a friend to support you. You'll
remember that when I was faced with the tough challenges I decided to
have the same commitment that a pig has to breakfast and so survive
the Great Victorian Bike Ride.
My mate Graeme convinced me to go on the bike ride and promised me
that he'd be with me all the way. And so he was... when I was down he
was there to cheer me up; when I was elated he was there to share my
joy; when I ached he gave me sympathy; and, I guess, I was there to do
the same for him.
Remember, doing tough stuff is easier when you've got a great friend!
