Are You Too Smart To Be Successful? I’ve been reminded on several occasions recently that we can know too much for our own good. Let me explain. The other day I had spoken at a conference and, in accordance with my philosophy that “its not what you do the same as everyone else that matters its what you do differently,” I had outlined a couple of radically different ideas to generate business. To say that the reception that greeted my presentation was frosty is an understatement. You could have snap frozen a cauliflower in that room in 60 seconds. People turned on me and proceeded to give me chapter and verse as to why what I had said would not work. In fact they all knew why the ideas could not possibly fly. Then one woman spoke up and said, “I’m only fairly new to the business and everybody tells me why they won’t work but every time I try one of Winston’s ideas they work. So I am going to give this one a try.” And I know she will give it a try and why do I know? Simple. A couple of hours later she was announced as winner of the Sales Person of the Year for her state. You see she kept on trying new ideas because she reckoned that she wasn’t smart enough to know why they wouldn’t work. Recently I have been talking to a health professional who has increased the business of a country practice by about 1500% in a few short years and that was done in a market where the experts said that supply exceeded demand. How did he do it! Well, I reckon its because he bought the practice just before he graduated and went into it straight from University. It meant that he never, ever worked for a boss who told him why things wouldn’t work. You see he kept on trying new ideas because he wasn’t smart enough to know they wouldn’t work. And a few years ago one of my kids was desperate to get a job and he went for one that hundreds of more qualified people applied for too. Yet he got the job! Why? Well he wasn’t smart enough to write the Curriculum Vita that everyone else did. He just wrote and told the prospective employer what he could bring to the job. He wasn’t smart enough to know why what he had done wouldn’t work (by the way if you want a copy of his letter just click here). Three examples of people not being smart enough to know why things wouldn’t work. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. Are you too smart to be successful? Perhaps its time to stop finding reasons why things won’t work and just do them instead. You may just be dumbstruck! Click here to
