Goals to get you through the day!

I reckon that if you want to get the best out of life you need to set yourself some goals so that you know where you are going and, more importantly when you’ve got there. Although setting goals is one of the most difficult things to do it’s also one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.

Now, when it comes to making the most out of every day you need to set yourself some personal goals to achieve every day.

I think that I have been reasonably successful in life and I’m pretty convinced that my success has a fair bit to do with the fact that I have three goals to achieve every day and they are:

  1. I need to laugh every day because a day without laughter is a day without wine; I guess you’ve met people who haven’t laughed for years and if they did, particularly at work, their hindquarters would fall off! Yet people say that laughter is mental jogging and we all know (even if we don’t do it) that jogging is good for our bodies so mental jogging must be great for our minds--- you know the old saying “use it or lose it”.

  1. Every day I try to learn something so that my mind is being fed new information, ideas and inspiration and like any good machine will function faultlessly if its being used and made to work. Frankly I reckon that there are a helluva lot of people who haven’t learnt anything since the day they left school or University except for when the boss has paid for them to learn something (and even then they’ve probably begrudged the time). I read a statistic somewhere that said that people who invest $1000 a year or more on their own personal development will end up earning 20% more than those who don’t. Seems like a great investment to me so that’s why I do it. Oh, there’s another reason and that’s because, like fruit if I’m ripe I’m rotten whereas if I’m green I’m growing!

  1. The toughest of my daily goals is that a daily objective is to help somebody because life is a boomerang, meaning that you get back what you give out or what goes around comes around. I think it was Zig Ziglar, the American motivational speaker who said “help enough people get what they want and you’ll get what you want” and even if it doesn’t give me all that I want I still get incredibly great feelings whenever I help somebody who appreciates it. Its also the hardest to achieve--- you’ll often see me driving around at midnight trying to find a little old lady to force across the road so I can go to bed!

Since September 11 last year I have added a fourth daily goal and that is one that I should have had years ago but didn’t realise it until those thousands of people who were going about their every day lives lost their lives in those Twin Towers. It made me wonder how many of them had gone off to work angry with a partner or having had an argument with one of their kids and hadn’t had the chance to tell them that they love them so now I try to tell the people in my life that I love them every day. Let me be brutally frank and admit that I don’t necessarily achieve it every day but I am trying. Sometimes too it’s not a matter of “telling” but rather that of “showing”--- after all often what you do is fair more important than what you say.

Now, those are my daily goals and they may or may not have application to you but at least, when I come to the end of every day I can quickly assess whether I’ve had a great day because I have achieved my goals or I have left undone some of those things which I ought to have done. And, although some days I don’t score perfectly on my goal sheet at least it keeps me heading in the right direction and I am sure has provided me with so much in return.
