The Dart Thrower

Sometime ago I was in a little village and everywhere I looked there were darts plumb in the middle of bullseyes. I was so amazed I just had to ask who threw the darts so well? It turned out to be a local lad and his response was simple.

“I throw the darts first and then I draw the circles!”

Naturally with an approach like that he never missed out on a bullseye but of course he couldn’t score a bullseye where it counted--- on the dartboard!

And isn’t that how many of us go about achieving things in life--- we throw the darts and then we draw the circles? Yet, the way to get good at throwing darts is simple. First you draw the circles and then you start throwing the darts. Pretty soon you’ll find you are throwing bullseyes.

So what’s the lesson in this?

Very simple! Make sure you set your goals. You see most people aim at nothing and hit it with amazing accuracy yet, once you’ve got something to aim at, you’ll be astounded at how often you hit what you are aiming at.

The problem for many people is that they have never learnt how to set goals. Its quite easy if you remember the SMART formula--- dreams become goals when you make them Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timebound.

Sixty percent of success comes from setting your goals simply because proper planning prevents pretty poor performance. When you are getting going with your goals I suggest that you set 2-3 business goals and 2-3 personal goals.

If you’d like more help on goal setting then its worth reading what my co-author Lisa McInnes-Smith has said in our book “How to motivate, manage & market yourself.” To find out more or to buy a copy just click here (it’s the best A$22.00 you’ll ever spend on yourself).
