I’d had a busy day and it was the last plane out of Sydney on Friday night. The plane was running a little bit late and by the time everybody boarded most were starting to feel a little bit on the bad tempered side of normal.

That was at least until the Purser began the usual announcements to welcome us on board and remind us to watch the safety video.

Because she remembered that, before she started to speak, she should put a big smile on her face. And because of that smile in her voice the whole mood of the plane changed. How could we be surly when she was talking to us with a smile?

And I guess you remember being told way back when you were being taught some of those old-fashioned business homilies that, before you pick up the phone to answer it, you should smile to the point of a grin.

And you’ll find the whole world will smile with you (well at least a plane load of passengers will!).

So remember the number one customer service rule… smile! It will change your day and theirs.

By the way, it was a Qantas flight.
