Firefighters rescue Custard from last stand (NZPA June 13, 2010, 3:45 pm)

Waikato firefighters branched out from ordinary duties today to abseil a trapped dog to safety and rescue a kitten trapped under a sink.

Cambridge firefighters were called out last night after a man went to help a lost dog at the bottom of a Mystery Creek cliff and became trapped himself when darkness fell and heavy rain set in.

The firefighters were called on again this morning to help the dog, a five-year-old named Custard, who had been trapped for four days.

The Cambridge brigade, along with Hamilton’s advanced rope rescue team, returned to the scene and were able abseil down to save Custard.

Earlier today, Te Awamutu firefighters also did their bit for animals, using hand tools to rescue a kitten stuck in an under-sink cupboard at a Raikes Avenue address.
