You probably know that I love animals so I was delighted when Eswen, (our Miracle Worker, yes that’s her title), pointed out a story she’d come across on ABC-TV’s ACT Lateline program.
It simply shows that, in any business, attitude is everything… if you have the right attitude and commitment then all things are possible.
Five years ago, euthanasia was the first option for animals entering the RSPCA’s Canberra animal shelter… now it’s the last thing. Instead of putting animals down that couldn’t be re-housed within a month the CEO decided that they would re-house every animal they received… no matter how long it took.
Change the attitude of the people in the business, any business, and the results will be astounding as this report shows http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2010/03/05/2838281.htm

so inspiring………… sigh……….
If you are keen to get behind an amazing project that I am proud to be a part of check out the website I’ve given. The Australian Animal Protection Society do similar work but on an incredibly tiny budget. We are helping to raise $26,000 plus per annum for their good work in a unique cause related marketing campaign. Would love to discuss it with you if your interested!
Cheers
Deb
That’s really encouraging news as the RSPCA does attract adverse comment for the practise of euthanasia although they are not the ones who abandon, mistreat or surrender their animals.
Let’s hope other branches of RSPCA follow the lead of the ACT and find a more compassionate way of dealing with this difficult problem.
I work in the pet industry (not selling animals) and will be including a link to this video in my next customer newsletter. More public awareness is needed to help raise funds for animal welfare.
Hi Ros and Deb,
Its great news and hopefully others will follow suit! There are quite a few organisations avoiding euthanasia, in some cases employing long term foster care. Some of the more notable include
http://www.tars.org.au/ and http://www.petshaven.com.au/ (Both Victorian). The Greyhound Adoption Program Victoria specifically re-homes ex-racing greyhounds, and is funded by Greyhound Racing Victoria.
Deb please feel free to give us a call or send usan email if you think we can help.
Regards
Eswen
Yes and Eswen, our miracle worker, actually fostered a greyhound and we had the pleasure of his company a couple of days a week during that time. He was great and accepted by everyone including my dogs, Sharnie & Millie, and cats, Charlie & Mishka.
Winno, the RSPCA ACT policy change is good news for our furry friends, no question there. But the truth is the RSPCA could have lead the way to a no kill policy years ago. Recently the Weekend Age did an investigation into the Lost Dogs Home – one of the biggest and oldest shelters in Australia. It found that the LDH had a staggering euthanasia rate of nearly 70% for dogs and 80% for cats. See for yourself: http://www.lostdogshomeexposed.webs.com/. The much higher rehoming rate of smaller rescue shelters and their increasing support by the public has put pressure on the larger ones to follow suit. (Now that’s a REAL story of determintion against the odds.) RSPCA ACT is only doing what it should and could have been doing for years.
Thanks Fabio and at least things appear to be heading in the right direction.
Yes, attitude is everything and what a great example to showcase that truth!
In the US and around the globe, people are beginning to realize that healthy, adoptable pets should not be killed. It is immoral and wrong.
I loved your post and I am going to share it with my friends.
Have you ever seen my site: No Kill Nation Foundation?
